May 23, 2025

On April 29, 2025, the Center for Crime Science at the Royal Police Cadet Academy welcomed a delegation from the National College of Policing and Law Enforcement under the Maldives Police Service for a study visit and academic seminar. The event was led by Asst. Pol. Col. Dr. Pipat Chanruam, Director of the Center, along with Pol. Maj. Manassanan Kantasri, Deputy Director, and Pol. Lt. Col. Seksin Seemapollakul, Secretary of the Center.

The seminar, titled "Introduction to Crime Science", introduced participants to the foundational concepts of crime science—an interdisciplinary approach that applies scientific principles and empirical methods to crime reduction and public safety. The session also provided an overview of the Center’s mission to enhance regional cooperation and strengthen law enforcement capacity through research-based knowledge and training.

Key topics of discussion included shared challenges faced by Thailand and the Maldives in combating modern crimes, particularly drug trafficking and cybercrime. The Maldives delegation shared cases of romance scams—online fraud schemes involving emotional manipulation and deception—which have become increasingly prevalent in their jurisdiction. Comparatively, Thai representatives described the rising issue of impersonation fraud via phone scams using illegally obtained personal data. Both parties recognized the value of mutual knowledge sharing and collaborative approaches in addressing these issues.

Additionally, the Maldives officers expressed keen interest in Thailand’s application of Problem-Oriented Policing within community policing initiatives, with the intention of exploring its adaptation in their local context.

This visit marked a significant step forward in fostering international collaboration in crime science, reinforcing the importance of shared expertise and regional solidarity in confronting the evolving, borderless nature of crime across ASEAN and beyond.
