“We have focused on making our cities ‘Smart Cities’—more modern, connected, and efficient—but too often, we have forgotten to make them safe.”

— Police Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Krit Muangsiri

A smart city may be equipped with advanced technology, management systems, and modern infrastructure. But the crucial question remains: Does the city make people feel safe—and feel that they truly belong?

A “safe city” is not created by surveillance cameras, fences, or control systems alone. It is also built on trust, human connections, and a shared sense of ownership over public spaces.

This idea was further explored during the Safe City Innovators workshop. Through the Design Thinking process, participants examined urban challenges from the perspectives and lived experiences of diverse groups and collaboratively designed approaches to creating a city that is safe for everyone.

A “Smart” city may make urban life more advanced,
but a “Safe” city must give people the confidence to live their lives fully.
